U središtu serije â??Kirurgâ?? je bolnica Knickerbocker u centru New Yorka 1900-ih i njezini pionirski kirurzi, medicinske sestre te osoblje koji šire granice medicine u vrijeme zapanjujuće visoke smrtnosti i bez ikakvih antibiotika. Dr. John Thackery je briljantan kirurg koji uvodi nove metode u svoju struku, unatoč teškoj ovisnosti o kokainu. On predvodi tim liječnika koji uključuje njegova štićenika dr. Everetta Gallingera, mladog dr. Bertieja Chickeringa ml. te Algernona Edwarsa, obećavajućega kirurga kojeg su mu nedavno natovarili.
